Quip Connector for eDiscovery & Data Collection
Collect Quip documents, chats, spreadsheets, and metadata for eDiscovery, compliance, and investigations without hassle or burdening IT. The Onna + Quip Connector gives you direct access to your organization's collaborative content on a defensible, unified platform.
Why Connect Quip to Your eDiscovery Collections Platform
Quip is where teams create, collaborate, and communicate, combining documents, spreadsheets, task lists, and chat in a single workspace. When legal or compliance needs arise, that content has to be surfaced quickly, completely, and in a defensible way.
Without the right tools, collecting from Quip presents real challenges because:
Documents, chats, and spreadsheets live together but need to be collected as a unified record
Comments, edits, and revisions are part of the evidentiary record and must be preserved
Content is organized in folders that may span teams and projects
Formatting and app-based content vary across document types
The Onna + Quip Connector pulls all accessible content in its native format through Quip's API, capturing documents, attachments, chat threads, and associated metadata in a single, structured collection.
Quip Connector Capabilities
The Onna + Quip Connector is built to handle the breadth of content types that live inside Quip workspaces.
Key capabilities include:
Direct API connection using an access token
File version tracking and revision history
Audit logs for all collection activity
Folder-level collection controls
Support for one-time and auto-sync and archive modes
Collection of documents, chats, spreadsheets, attachments, and to-do lists
Native format preservation with metadata
These capabilities allow organizations to perform targeted folder-level collections or maintain ongoing archives of Quip content.
What Data Can Be Collected from Quip
The connector captures content and metadata from across Quip workspaces including:
Documents & Collaboration
All accessible documents and document edits
Chats and chatrooms
Attachments
To-do lists
Spreadsheets
Comments made on files
Metadata
Author
File creation date
File last modified date
MD5 hash
Parent folder name
File path
Revision history
These collections preserve the structure and context of collaborative work so investigators can accurately reconstruct document activity and communication threads.
Note: Onna does not collect content from the following Quip app styles: Kanban, Calendar, Project Tracker, Process Bar, Poll, and Countdown. However, text, titles, and comments written directly to the page — such as comments on a Kanban card — are collected, as are document metadata for these file types.
Quip Metadata Collected
Along with standard file metadata, the connector captures Quip-specific fields including:
Author
File creation and last modified dates
MD5 hash for integrity verification
Full file path
Revision history
This metadata gives investigators the context needed to establish document provenance, track changes over time, and identify key contributors within Quip.
How Quip Data Collection Works
Setting up a Quip collection in Onna is straightforward and requires no admin credentials.
Add Quip as a data source
Navigate to your workspace and add Quip as a source.
Authenticate the connection
Enter a name for your new source and provide your Quip Access Token, then click Configure.
Select content types
Choose the elements you want to include in your sync — such as documents, chats, spreadsheets, or attachments.
Configure the collection
Define your collection settings including:
- Sync mode (one-time or auto-sync and archive)
- Sync start date and, if applicable, end date

Choose which Quip folders to include in your collection. If you'd like to capture folders created after the sync begins, check the box next to "Sync any folder created in the future." Note this option is not available with one-time syncs.
Start sync
Once configuration is complete, your Quip collection begins and the new source appears alphabetically in your list of connected sources.
Quip Data Collection Option
The Onna + Quip Connector supports two sync modes to fit different collection needs.
One-Time Sync
A defined, targeted collection with a set start and end date, suited for litigation or investigations with a fixed scope.
Auto-Sync & Archive
Continuously collects new documents, edits, and content as they are added to connected Quip folders, building an ongoing compliance archive.
Common Quip eDiscovery Use Cases

Onna + Quip Connector FAQs
Documents deleted from Quip will not be removed from Onna. This is a result of API limitations on Quip's end. Any modifications made to a document prior to deletion will be reflected in Onna.
Onna makes every effort to replicate Quip's formatting, but an exact match cannot be guaranteed in all cases due to how formatting is handled within Quip's platform.
Onna does not collect content rendered within Quip's Kanban, Calendar, Project Tracker, Process Bar, Poll, or Countdown app styles. However, any text, titles, or comments written directly to the page are collected, as is the document metadata for those files.
You only need a Quip Access Token — no admin access is required. Be aware that generating a new token through Onna's UI will invalidate any previously issued tokens.
