Data Management

Future-proofing your information governance strategy

Onna
June 16, 2020

Cloud applications are driving the future of work. With the ability to operate anytime, anywhere, collaborating on these cloud applications, is creating an exponential increase in enterprise data. As a result, our knowledge is scattered, unorganized, and undiscoverable.

Joined by Lisa Ripley, Director, eDiscovery & Information Governance, Legal Operations at Oracle, Lindsey Simon, VP of Software Engineering at Quip, and Crystal Cao, Sr Manager, Information Governance, formally Airbnb, this 60-minute webinar explores the biggest challenges enterprises face with their information governance strategy and best practices on how to tackle them.

Our major takeaways:

• The goal is to make decisions on what you want to keep and for how long. You should only keep the data you need for compliance, legal & regulatory, and critical business reasons.

• Data maps showcase all the software an organization uses, how you get data from each software, what systems have been used, how secure the platforms are, and how to build a disposal process. They also help you retain a defensible position on the reasons why you might not be able to acquire data from certain platforms.

• You need to know your tools and what their individual retention policies look like. Like Slack for example, if you don’t have retention on your plan, the data is not stored. If the tools don’t give you IG capabilities, you need to do what is within reason.

• There are dark repositories that get uncovered that have gotten dragged along for 20-30 years (or more.) At a big company, you may stumble across tools or data that you may not understand why it’s used or where it came from, especially after M&A activity. You have to take initiative and talk to internal stakeholders across the organization to get answers.

• Culture plays a role as your data ages. What was culturally appropriate 40-50 years ago (or even longer) is not considered acceptable now. Holding onto that data can be a major liability.

• To help enact company-wide compliance try 1. To get notified what tools are getting rolled out when 2. See how you can bake IG and compliance into their implementation 3. Educate your team on why IG and compliance is of utmost importance.
